Make Limoncello!! If you haven't had the opportunity to try this liquid gold, run to the liquor store right now and get some! However, I believe that to truly experience it, you need to head straight to the Amalfi coast of Italy where the lemons grow to be the size of your head! (Well, maybe not quite that big, but pretty darn big.) It's tempting to pick them right off the trees as you stroll the streets of Positano. Limoncello the perfect ending to a delicious Italian meal as you gaze out over the Adriatic Sea. It is an after dinner drink served chilled that is as refreshing to the palate as a dip in the ocean on a hot summer's day! It's made from the zest of the lemon steeped in grappa until the oil is released and then mixed with a simple syrup. The tart, yet sweet flavor will have you coming back for seconds for sure! If you are in Italy, but can't make it to the Amalfi coast, head over to Cinque Terre where this delectable little drink is called Limoncino and often made in the kitchens of the residents from the lemons that grow in their yard. We were fortunate enough to stay at Il Boma Bed and Breakfast in Riomaggiore. Maddy is a fantastic host who gifted us her delicious homemade limoncino upon our departure from her quaint and lovely seaside town. (I could write another entire blog post just about our stay in Riomaggiore...maybe I will.) We were sad when we drank the last drop over a year later, but I guess that just means we need to go back for more! Regardless of where you try limoncello/limoncino, I guarantee you will want to bring many bottles back with you. It just doesn't taste the same if you buy it in the states..maybe it's memories of bella Italia that come back with you that make it taste that much better.
